Elly Kelly: News

Article from Dan Rourke - September 15, 2011

The Queen ruled with supremacy last Wednesday the 17th when Campbellfords own Elly Kelly capped another successful season of Melodies at the Mill. Speaking with Donna Englehart, a tireless volunteer with the Campbellford Lionesses, she expressed a great deal of gratitude to the business community of Campbellford as well as thanking all the other volunteers and performers for providing such a wonderful musical tradition for residents and guests of this rich community.
Funds raised from this years series of concerts, which I am assured will continue, will be used to help general coffers for the Lions and Lionesses. These funds will be reinvested llocally.
I had the pleasure of meeting a couple from Newfoundland who came to see an idol of theirs - Elly Kelly. The outright pleasure they expressed at meeting an East Coast Music Legend was palpable. On this night Elly was ably assisted by good friends and local legends Curly Taylor (The Old Man In The Nursing Home), Brian Cosbey (whose album Country Moods features among others Elly Kelly), as well as bassist Jim Ellis (Country Greats) a local stalwart.
Anyone of the band could have held the stage aloft on their own, but with this talented threesome in the background the Queen as I already said - ruled supreme. Elly played a great selection of her well known tunes and many were moved to get to their feet knowing full well how to celebrate a Down East ceilidh (kitchen party).
Others in this largest crowd of the season were moved in different ways. When Elly played her homage to departed husband Joe (titled Going Home), there were many in the audience who were moved to tears. That is the kind of performer the Queen of the Acadian sound is. She moves your feet, she moves your heart, she touches somehow the souls of those she meets. Not surprising the boat docked closest to the stage was the Arch Angel, and if this Arch Angel had any other name it would be Joe.
Next year's season of Melodies At The Mill will give all of us another opportunity to enjoy a beautiful evening by the river celebrating the joy of a short but always treasured summer by enjoying the sounds offered by our vibrant local music industry.

Elly Kelly Poem - September 8, 2008

Elly Kelly Magic

Elly Kelly turns to jelly
Anyone who's sore or stiff.
This is how she works her magic
'Cause for sure she has a gift:
She has a chair, she has a board
And an ac-cord-i-on
And a smile that stretches miles
Then turns into a grin;
And when she starts to stomp & squeeze
Everybody's feet wake up
And hands are clapin'
Toes are tappin'
And the worlds' a lovin' cup.
So if she doesn't get you started
I'm afraid that it's too late
You're ready for the undertaker
And six feet down must be your fate. - Herb Adams August 31, 2008
